So, in today’s economy it’s almost as expensive to purchase gas for your car as it is to keep a roof over your head.  What alternatives are there?  Some are interested in the new hybrid electric cars.  However, the cost of those vehicles has not yet reached a level of affordability for the average consumer.

The fastest rising option has become riding a scooter.  Even some police departments are now using them.

Our scooter shops in Orlando (Winter Park) and Lake Mary have definitely seen a rise in more people purchasing a scooter for the sole reason of better gas savings.  With the gas prices continuing to rise, the scooter is quickly becoming a more popular mode of transportation.  It’s no longer a vehicle for just college students to get around with.  It seems there are a vast variety of people riding scooters nowadays.

Although our exact gas mileage per scooter varies depending on the size and model, many scooters have an 90-95 mile per gallon range.  Other factors such as your scooter maintenance and engine size also help determine how to get the most gas mileage out of your scooter.

Robin started the foundation in 2007  in honor of her mother Libby Maynard who past after losing her battle to stage IV breast cancer.  The foundation is principled upon the basis of providing comprehensive Breast Health Care to the under-served Central Florida Community.  The foundation provides assistance through education, mammograms, follow up diagnostics, and Hope coaches for those less fortunate whom are battling breast cancer.  Scooters 4 Hooters charity ride proceeds all go to Libby’s Lagacy Foundation tp support this goal.

There are 47 families IN OUR HOMETOWN AREA that were nominated to receive gifts and food from this charity, and because of our donations they will all have a Christmas they wouldn’t otherwise have!

The event was this past Tues, and there were an estimated 15 people confirmed to come.  The more the word spread for this great cause (via Facebook and word of mouth), people POURED in with NUMEROUS toys to donate. In total, there were over 45 people there to support this Wild Hogs’s sponsored toy drive event!!

Toys were not only overflowing out of the boxes we brought to transport them in,but  they were overflowing an entire table full and onto the floor!

It took 3 vehicles to get these toys to the warehouse where families in need will come pick them out for their children. Here at Wild Hogs, we have a tremendous support team that continues to grow rapidly. We not only sell scooters and ATV’s, but we support our local community as well.

2.  Scooters and not required to be insured like our cars are.  Although, insurance policies are available should you choose to purchase one, but it’s optional.

3.  Scooters are less expensive to maintain.  Oil changes, tune-ups, tires, and most parts are cheaper to replace on your scooter than in a car.

4.  Scooters are automatic.  Unlike a motorcycle, there is no clutch, or gear shifter.  All you need to do is get on, twist-and-go.

5.  Purchasing a scooter offers advantages of a lower initial cost, as opposed to purchasing a car.

6.  Scooters are environmentally friendly- a great way to help the environment and ride green!

7.  Commuting on a scooter also offers a convenient way of transportation, as you can hop on and just go.  Parking is often found to be easier than with a car.  Many places offer scooter and motorcycle parking.  So, no more driving in circles in your car and wasting more gas, when you can park a little closer and go right inside.

8.  A motorcycle endorsement for your license is not required for riding legally on Florida roads, for a scooter that is 50cc or less. *Note: the larger 125cc, 150cc, 250cc scooters and higher will require the motorcycle course and endorsement.  However, 50cc scooters allow fo you to commute without the worry of needing an additional license.

9.  Scooters are safer than riding a motorcycle.  On a motorcycle, you need to coordinate both of your feet and hands to operate it.  On a scooter, you place your feet on the riding panel (floorboard) and then use your hands to operate the scooter’s throttle and brakes.  Scooters also have a lower center of gravity and the engine placement is more towards the back of the vehicle, which will make it more difficult to go over the handlebars of the vehicle by flipping (please note that riding safely and following the recommended riding guideline is important because it is still possible to flip on a scooter, due to improper operation).

If you are in Orlando, or Central Florida, many people are looking for the smaller scooter size of 50cc or less because Florida requires a motorcycle endorsement for vehicles more than 50cc.

In Florida, a vehicle powered by a motor displacement of more than 50 cubic centimeters (cc), having a seat or saddle for the use of the rider, and designed to travel on not more than 3 wheels in contact with the ground, excluding tractors, tri-vehicle or moped is defined in Florida as a motorcycle. F.S. 322.01(26).

Thus, the distinction between a 49cc scooter and a 50cc scooter, mainly has to do with how the Florida law is written defining what a motorcycle is and 49cc scooters are what many will ask the scooter dealer about because they don’t want have to get the motorcycle endorsement.  The manufacturers of scooters, make them in a 49cc, so some dealers will tell you it’s a 50cc scooter, because the reason most people are asking is because of the motorcycle license part that they read 50cc in the Florida law.

So, in reality if you own a “50cc” scooter, it is probably actually a 49cc.  Most dealers don’t advertise them as 49cc, but that’s what they are.

Just a note on 125cc, 150cc, 260cc, and larger scooters.  For those vehicles you will need to do the Motorcycle driver course and get the motorcycle endorsement.  Many schools will also allow you to do the course on a scooter or an actual motorcycle.

Smaller 50cc scooters are great for the shorter commutes.  Some can reach speeds of up to 45-50 miles per hour. While many 50cc scooters are what people term as “Chinese scooters,” there are some major companies that have “scooted” in the thriving scooter market.  Schwinn, Puma, Peace, and many others are available in 50cc, as well as 150cc.

There are many scooter dealers selling scooters online.  One of the things that is an important difference between purchasing a scooter at your local dealer versus purchasing a scooter online is your warranty.  Many online dealers offer a 6 month warranty, or less.  Also, parts may be difficult to locate, as well as the wait to get them may be long.

Most scooters are gas powered, with a 1-2 gallon gas tank, producing approximately 70 mpg and upwards.  The size of the engine and gas tank reservoir, and your bike’s overall maintenance will determine your fuel efficiency.

There are many brands of scooters available.  For example, Wild Hogs Scooters offers such brand names as Schwinn, Linhai/Yamaha, Peace, and Jonway.  Of course, at Wild Hogs we also service what we sell.  This is important, because many others sell Chinese gas scooters that could have hard to find parts, or parts that have to be special ordered.

This is a good reason to make your scooter purchase at a shop, rather than online.  Some of the online companies offer lower pricing on their scooters, but you will pay additional fees for shipping.  Additionally, it will come in a box, only partially assembled, in which, you will have to spend additional monies to have it put together or you can attempt to assemble it on your own.  From the point you purchase and receive your new scooter, you are pretty much on your own in terms of warranty, and service.   It’s something to think about when purchasing a new scooter.

Scooters come in a range of engine sizes.  The most common sizes are 50cc, 125cc, 150cc, 250cc, and 300cc.  Basically, this would be comparable to buying a 4 cylinder car versus a 6 cylinder or 8 cylinder car.  The higher the cc number of your bike, the higher the power it is capable of.
